Legendary actress Babita has finally addressed long-standing rumors regarding her celebrated on-screen and off-screen relationship with the late iconic actor Zafar Iqbal. The pair, who starred in approximately 40 films together, were once the most prominent duo in Bangladeshi cinema, sparking widespread public fascination and intense media speculation during the height of their careers.
Reflecting on their partnership, Babita recalled starting her career alongside Iqbal at the age of 15 or 16. She described the late actor as the quintessential “super smart” personality of his generation, noting his exceptional charm, musical talent, and refined manners. According to the actress, their professional collaboration evolved naturally into a deep friendship and eventually a romantic relationship, a dynamic that was both fueled and enjoyed by their widespread fan base and the press at the time.
Beyond their cinematic success, the duo shared a strong bond centered on music. Babita fondly remembered spending breaks during film shoots listening to Iqbal play the guitar; he even taught her English songs, creating a rapport that resonated deeply with audiences. Despite the persistent rumors of a tragic romance, Babita clarified that their relationship eventually drifted apart without a dramatic conclusion. She emphasized that a romantic connection does not always necessitate marriage, framing their split as a natural transition in their lives.
Babita also sought to dispel a long-held narrative surrounding one of Iqbal’s most famous songs, “Sukhe Thako O Amar Nandini.” Many fans and critics long believed the lyrics were a heartbreak ballad written for her after their separation. However, Babita debunked this notion, sharing that when she once confronted Iqbal about the song, he assured her that he performed it purely based on the creative vision of the songwriter and composer, rather than as a personal message to her.
The actress expressed regret over the final chapter of Iqbal’s life. She recounted a chance encounter on a film set where she found him looking unwell and disheveled, shortly before he succumbed to cancer. While she was unable to visit him in the hospital during his final days, she paid her last respects at the Film Development Corporation (FDC) after his passing, honoring a man who remained one of the most significant figures of her artistic journey.
