Late Actor Pradeep Rawat Remembered for Pivotal Role in Launching Aamir Khan Starrer Ghajini

Pradeep Rawat, the seasoned character actor celebrated for his iconic villainous turn in the Tamil and Telugu versions of “Ghajini,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 74. Rawat, who had been undergoing treatment for cancer, died at a medical facility in Bhiwandi after being transferred from Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital roughly ten days prior. He is survived by his wife and son, Vikramaditya.
Beyond his prolific screen career, Rawat is remembered in the Indian film industry for his pivotal role in bringing the 2008 Hindi blockbuster “Ghajini” to fruition. In a retrospective interview shared two years ago with journalist Siddharth Kannan, Rawat recounted how a chance encounter on the set of an S.S. Rajamouli production led to his collaboration with director A.R. Murugadoss.
While filming Rajamouli’s sports-drama “Sai,” Rawat noticed a stranger repeatedly observing him from his makeup room door. Upon confrontation, the man identified himself as A.R. Murugadoss. Rawat noted that at the time, the director—who struggled with Hindi and English—was initially interested in casting Salman Khan for the lead role of his ambitious project, “Ghajini.”
Sensing a potential personality clash between the volatile temperament of the director and a star like Khan, Rawat intervened. Having known Aamir Khan for over 25 years, Rawat felt Aamir’s patient and professional demeanor would be better suited for a collaboration with the debuting director.
To bridge the gap, Rawat invited Aamir Khan to screen the original Tamil version of “Ghajini” without explicitly pitching the remake. Captivated by the film’s narrative and character depth, Aamir expressed an immediate interest in starring in a Hindi adaptation. It was only at that moment that Rawat revealed the director was already waiting to cast him, effectively setting the stage for the film that would become a landmark in Bollywood cinema.
