Veteran Indian Character Actor Pradeep Rawat Dies at 74

Veteran character actor Pradeep Rawat, celebrated for his versatile portrayals of complex antagonists across Indian cinema, passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 74. The actor, who had been battling cancer, died at approximately 6:00 p.m. at a specialized oncology facility in Bhiwandi, where he had been transferred nearly 10 days earlier from Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for advanced treatment. He is survived by his wife and his son, Vikramaditya.
Bollywood actor Yashpal Sharma confirmed the loss, paying tribute to the late artist on Instagram. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Rawat became a familiar and formidable presence in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam films. He achieved widespread critical acclaim for his chilling performance as the antagonist in the 2005 Tamil blockbuster “Ghajini,” a role he reprised with equal intensity in the 2008 Hindi remake opposite Aamir Khan.
Rawat’s professional association with Aamir Khan was long-standing, beginning with the Academy Award-nominated film “Lagaan” in 2001. However, many audiences first encountered the actor through the small screen in B.R. Chopra’s legendary television series “Mahabharat,” where his portrayal of Ashwatthama earned him significant recognition. Although he made his cinematic debut in the 1985 film “Meri Jung,” it was his performance in the epic historical drama that solidified his standing in the industry.
The actor’s extensive filmography includes notable roles in “Sarfarosh,” “The Hero: Love Story of a Spy,” and S.S. Rajamouli’s 2004 production “Sye,” which marked his debut in Telugu cinema. Throughout his later career, he remained a consistent performer in major regional titles, including “Stalin,” “Veeram,” “1: Nenokkadine,” “Loukyam,” “Nenu Sailaja,” “Sarrainodu,” “Nene Raju Nene Mantri,” “Ayirathil Iruvar,” “Market Raja MBBS,” and “Miss Match.”
