Veteran actor Ilias Kanchan returns to Bangladesh following intensive brain tumor treatment in London

Legendary Bangladeshi actor Ilias Kanchan has returned to Dhaka for a brief visit after undergoing extensive medical treatment for a brain tumor in London. The veteran actor, celebrated for his iconic performance in the record-breaking film “Beder Meye Josna,” arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday morning after spending over 18 months receiving specialized care abroad.

Kanchan’s health journey began in April of last year, followed by brain surgery in August. Due to the complexity and risks associated with the procedure, surgeons were unable to remove the entire tumor, necessitating a rigorous regimen of 60 chemotherapy sessions. Accompanied by his son-in-law, Ariful Islam Collins, the actor appeared visibly changed by the grueling treatment, though he maintained a composed demeanor upon his arrival.

Expressing gratitude to his supporters, Kanchan offered brief remarks at the airport, confirming he felt well and requesting prayers from his millions of admirers. Despite the emotional homecoming, the visit is temporary. According to journalist Liton Ershad, a longtime official with the actor’s “Nirapad Sarak Chai” (Safe Road Movement) organization, Kanchan is scheduled to return to London by August 14 for a critical medical evaluation and follow-up examinations on August 15.

The decision to bring the actor home was driven by his intense desire to reunite with his family during a difficult period of uncertainty. While his family ensured he received top-tier medical attention in the United Kingdom, those close to the actor have noted that the treatment process has been emotionally and physically taxing.

A recipient of the prestigious Ekushey Padak for his contributions to the arts and his tireless advocacy for road safety, Kanchan remains a towering figure in the nation’s cultural history. His brief return has offered a moment of relief to his colleagues and fans, who continue to monitor his progress as he navigates his ongoing recovery.
