Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Police Official Over Rape Allegations

A Dhaka tribunal issued an arrest warrant Monday for Mohammad Zahirul Islam, an Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, in connection with allegations of sexual assault under the guise of marriage. The order was issued by Judge Muntasir Ahmed of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 following the officer’s failure to appear for a scheduled hearing.
The case stems from a complaint filed on May 20 by a woman who alleges she was exploited by the defendant while he served as the Superintendent of Police in Magura. According to court documents, the two met in January 2021, at which point the defendant allegedly coerced the complainant into an intimate relationship by promising to divorce his wife and marry her.

The complainant asserted that the relationship reached a public stage on February 14, 2021, when the defendant presented her with a nose ring at his official government bungalow in Magura. The following month, while the complainant was hospitalized in Dhaka, the defendant reportedly represented himself as her husband to facilitate her medical care. She alleges that throughout 2021, the defendant engaged in sexual relations with her at his government residence, office, and her private home, repeatedly renewing his promise of marriage even after he was transferred to the police headquarters in Dhaka.
Tensions escalated on July 13, 2024, when the defendant allegedly refused to follow through on his marriage proposal and threatened the complainant with legal consequences should she pursue the matter. Court records indicate that the complainant previously sought intervention from the Inspector General of Police in July 2023 and filed a general diary with the Bhatara Police Station shortly thereafter.

After unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter through mutual acquaintances, the complainant alleged that the defendant threatened her again on March 15 of this year outside the Dhaka Judges Court.
The tribunal’s decision to issue the warrant followed a judicial inquiry prompted by the initial filing. On July 14, a judicial officer submitted a report confirming the substance of the allegations, leading the court to schedule a hearing for the report’s adoption. The warrant was ordered after the defendant failed to present himself for the proceedings. Zahirul Islam, who is currently OSD (Officer on Special Duty) at the police headquarters, remains subject to the court’s order.
