Three children drowned in a pond in the Monohardi sub-district of Narsingdi on Saturday, casting a pall of grief over the local community. The bodies of the victims—Sumaiya, 12, Ashamoni, 12, and Fatema, 11—were recovered from a pond adjacent to the Khidirpur Union Parishad office mid-afternoon.

The children, all of whom were students at local madrasas, were residents of the surrounding area. Ashamoni was the daughter of Tuhin Miah, while Fatema was the daughter of Saiful Islam, both from Char Ahammadpur village. Sumaiya, who was visiting from Baisha village in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon sub-district, was the daughter of Mofasser Ali.

According to family members and local sources, the children were neighbors and frequent playmates. Recognizing that the girls did not know how to swim, their families had strictly forbidden them from entering the pond. However, at approximately noon on Saturday, the children were playing near the water’s edge and decided to enter the pond while their families were unaware. The pond proved to be too deep for the children, and all three disappeared beneath the surface.

The tragedy was discovered when the children failed to return home for their midday meal, prompting an immediate search by their families. At approximately 3:30 p.m., the body of one child surfaced, leading relatives and local residents to enter the water and recover the remaining two.
