Fire guts scrap-laden lorry on Dhaka-Chattogram highway

A scrap-laden lorry caught fire on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Sitakunda on Tuesday evening, causing significant damage to the vehicle but resulting in no casualties. The blaze broke out at approximately 6:30 p.m. near the Fouzdarhat pedestrian bridge.

According to the Baro Awliya Highway Police, the lorry was transporting scrap metal from the Chittagong Port to the AKS Steel mill in the Sonaichhari union when it developed a mechanical fault while traversing the pedestrian bridge. The fire quickly engulfed the vehicle’s cabin, rendering it completely charred.

Sub-Inspector Md. Hashem of the Baro Awliya Highway Police confirmed that officers arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to manage traffic and clear the wreckage. The fire caused a temporary suspension of traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway, though police were eventually able to reopen one lane to maintain the flow of vehicles.

Imrul Kader Bhuiyan, Deputy General Manager of Abul Khair Group, stated that the company is currently investigating the cause of the fire and has dispatched engineers to examine the remains of the lorry. While the exact trigger for the blaze remains unknown, company officials estimate that the damage to the vehicle amounts to approximately 2 million taka.
