Two missing after boat capsizes in Rajshahi Padma River

Two people remain missing after an engine-powered boat capsized in the Padma River near the Borokuthi area of Rajshahi on Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m. when the vessel, carrying eight passengers, was overtaken by strong currents and waves while traversing the middle of the river.
The missing individuals have been identified as 60-year-old Afsar Ali and his 40-year-old son, Ziarul Haque, both residents of the Shyampur Balurghat area. According to witnesses, the boat was transporting a load of wood from Char Majhardiar when it began to founder. As the vessel took on water and sank, nearby boatmen and local residents stationed at the Padma Garden embankment rushed to the scene to initiate a rescue operation.

Six passengers were successfully pulled from the water, including 55-year-old Zahera Begum, the wife of Afsar Ali and mother of Ziarul. Following the rescue, a distraught Zahera Begum was seen at the riverbank, struggling to comprehend the disappearance of her husband and son despite efforts by onlookers to console her.
The Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence dispatched a team of divers to the site shortly after the incident was reported. Manzil Haque, deputy director of the Rajshahi fire station, confirmed that six divers were deployed to conduct an intensive underwater search. Despite these efforts, neither the missing men nor the sunken boat had been located as of 5:00 p.m.

Emergency responders have continued their operations across multiple points in the river. Authorities have stated that the search mission will remain active until sunset in an attempt to recover the missing passengers.
