Court grants police one-day jail gate interrogation for Satkhira Awami League leader in student murder case

A Dhaka court has granted permission for law enforcement to interrogate Satkhira District Awami League General Secretary Nazrul Islam for one day at the prison gate in connection with the murder of university student Ramiz Uddin Ahmed during the July uprising.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid issued the order on Wednesday following a hearing. Sub-Inspector Arif Reza of the prosecution department confirmed the development, noting that the accused appeared in court without legal representation during the proceedings.
Nazrul Islam was initially arrested by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on July 27 in the city’s Bashundhara residential area. Following his appearance in court the following day, police sought a seven-day remand to facilitate a thorough investigation. The court originally sent the accused to prison while scheduling the remand hearing for Wednesday.
In their petition, investigators argued that preliminary findings and witness testimonies implicate Islam in the violence. Police further noted that because the accused resides in a different district and faces the possibility of absconding if released on bail, custodial interrogation is essential to uncover the full scope of the incident and track down remaining suspects.
The case stems from the death of 21-year-old Ramiz Uddin Ahmed, a computer science student at Daffodil International University, who was participating in the anti-discrimination student movement on August 24. According to court records, protesters were fired upon near the Karwan Bazar metro station, where Ahmed sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his right eye. Although he was rushed to the Padma Hospital and subsequently transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he was declared dead upon arrival.
Following the tragedy, the victim’s father, A.K.M. Rakibul Ahmed, filed a murder case at the Tejgaon Police Station. The complaint names 223 individuals as suspects, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
