Police recover newborn remains from Rajbari trash heap after botched burial attempt

Police in Rajbari recovered the body of a newborn infant from a garbage dump near the municipal food warehouse in the Binodpur area on Thursday morning. The discovery was made by a local youth scavenging for recyclables, who alerted residents after finding the body wrapped in fabric inside a plastic bag.
The infant’s father, Masudur Rahman, a madrasa teacher from Pabna’s Sujanagar upazila, stated that his wife, Shakila Islam, had traveled to her extended family’s home in Rajbari to give birth to their first child. Following a stillbirth via cesarean section at a private clinic on Wednesday night, the family entrusted the child’s remains to a relative for burial.

According to Rahman, his wife’s relative, Chunnu Mridha, offered to handle the funeral arrangements and accepted funds to cover the associated costs. Rahman said he was in a state of deep distress following the loss and was led to believe the child would be buried appropriately. Instead, the remains were abandoned at the garbage site overnight.
Local residents notified the authorities immediately after the body was discovered at approximately 9:30 a.m. Responding officers recovered the remains and transported them to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Rajbari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Uttam Kumar Ghosh confirmed that an inquest was conducted at the scene. While the incident remains under investigation, the father has indicated he does not intend to pursue legal action. Police stated that the body will be released to the family for burial in their home district once the post-mortem examination is complete.
