Chittagong police arrest top crime syndicate leader David Emon while attempting to flee to India

Chittagong police have arrested top-tier criminal Mobarak Hossain, widely known as “David Emon,” following a clandestine return to the country. Authorities apprehended him in Jessore late Tuesday night as he attempted to flee back across the Indian border, just four days after crossing into Bangladesh.
According to Chittagong Range Additional Deputy Inspector General Nazimul Haque, Emon is a primary associate of the notorious fugitive criminal Sajjad Ali, commonly referred to as “Boro Sajjad,” who is currently based in India. Police officials believe Emon possesses multiple passports and utilizes the border to facilitate his movements. During his time as a fugitive, Emon reportedly lived alongside Sajjad Ali in India, coordinating criminal activities in Chittagong.
Emon is currently facing at least 15 criminal cases, including charges related to a double murder in the Bakalia area in March 2025 and the killing of “Dhakaiya Akbar” at the Patenga sea beach in May 2025. Law enforcement agencies describe Emon as a highly skilled marksman, suspected of possessing and utilizing between 15 and 20 firearms. Investigations into the Bakalia murders suggest that Emon was responsible for recruiting both gunmen and logistics for the operation.
Following Emon’s detention, authorities launched a search operation in Noakhali’s Senbag area to apprehend his primary accomplice, Mohammad Rayhan. Although police surrounded the suspect’s residence, Rayhan managed to evade capture by scaling a wall before officers could secure the perimeter. Efforts to locate and arrest him remain ongoing.
Police intelligence indicates that Emon and Rayhan assumed leadership of the criminal syndicate after a previous leader, Sajjad Hossain (“Choto Sajjad”), was incarcerated. The gang, operating under the directives of the fugitive Boro Sajjad, allegedly employs a network of approximately 50 active shooters and associates to conduct extortion and targeted violence against businesses and individuals throughout Chittagong. Rayhan himself is wanted in connection with at least eight cases involving extortion, illegal arms, and murder. Authorities are currently interrogating Emon to uncover further details regarding the syndicate’s structure, international movements, and weapons caches.
