Court grants bail to Regent Hospital chairman Shahed in fraud case

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to Regent Hospital Chairman Mohammad Shahed Karim in a fraud case involving the non-payment of one crore taka for construction materials. Despite the ruling, legal representatives confirmed that Shahed will remain in custody due to other pending criminal charges against him.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam issued the 10-day interim bail order following a hearing, mandating a bond of 5,000 taka. Defense lawyer Mohammad Dabir Uddin stated that the court’s decision was contingent upon an agreement to reach a settlement with the plaintiff. The lawyer noted that the defense was previously unaware of the case, which was filed on July 13, 2020, until Shahed was formally shown as arrested in this matter while already incarcerated.
The case originates from a complaint filed by Mohammad Saifullah Masud, the proprietor of Messers Masud Enterprise. According to court records, Masud had been supplying construction materials to Shahed since 2018. While initial transactions were settled in cash, subsequent payments were made via cheque.
The prosecution alleges that four cheques issued by Shahed, totaling one crore taka, were dishonored by Prime Bank due to insufficient funds. The complaint further asserts that when Masud attempted to collect the outstanding payment on June 26, 2020, Shahed refused to pay and issued death threats, prompting the victim to file a general diary with the Uttara West Police Station.
The court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for September 8.
