Dhaka University cancels Udichi cultural rally citing scheduling conflict

Dhaka University authorities have revoked permission for a cultural rally organized by a faction of the Udichi Shilpi Gosthi, which was scheduled to take place at the Central Shaheed Minar on Friday to mark the second anniversary of the July mass uprising. The cancellation, communicated via an official letter sent on Tuesday, cited “unavoidable circumstances” without providing a specific explanation.
The cultural organization had secured approval for the event on July 22 after submitting a formal request to the university proctor’s office to use the Shaheed Minar premises from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Udichi had already commenced promotional activities and public outreach before receiving the notification of the cancellation on July 28.

Leadership within the organization has questioned the legitimacy of the administration’s decision, describing it as an irregularity. Udichi General Secretary Jamshed Anwar Tapan alleged that the university’s proctorial body was influenced by political pressure, asserting that since the university maintains a formal registry for scheduling events, it should be impossible to double-book the venue for the same date.
In response to the allegations, Acting Proctor Israfil Ratan attributed the situation to an administrative error. He explained that after granting approval to Udichi, the university mistakenly issued a permit for the same venue and time to a political entity, the Ganosanghati Andolon, for a program expected to be attended by State Minister for Planning Dr. Junaid Saki.

The Acting Proctor noted that to prevent potential conflict or security risks arising from overlapping events, the administration decided to cancel Udichi’s permit. He added that the university had proposed alternative venues to the organizers, but the offer was declined.
