India Awaits Decision on Bangladesh Prime Minister Attendance at BRICS Summit

Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Dinesh Trivedi signaled a strong desire for continued bilateral cooperation following his first formal meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister Shama Obaid Islam on Wednesday. The discussions, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, addressed a broad range of topics, including bilateral relations, cultural ties, and sports.
The visit comes as uncertainty lingers over Prime Minister Tareq Rahman’s participation in the 18th BRICS summit, scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended an invitation to Rahman, in his capacity as the current chair of BIMSTEC, to attend the summit’s outreach program. When asked about the potential visit, Trivedi emphasized that the decision rests solely with the Bangladeshi leadership.
Trivedi reiterated India’s enthusiasm for a high-level diplomatic exchange, expressing optimism that a visit by the Bangladeshi Prime Minister will materialize in the near future. He described the initial meeting with the newly appointed cabinet members as warm and productive, reflecting the historically deep-rooted connections between the two nations.
Highlighting the recent restoration of visa services for Bangladeshi citizens, the High Commissioner underscored the significance of accessibility for the people of both countries. He noted that the bilateral relationship extends beyond geographic borders, rooted in shared cultures and aspirations.
While the meeting served as an introductory platform for the High Commissioner and the Bangladeshi ministers, Trivedi characterized the session as the beginning of an ongoing dialogue. He expressed a commitment to fostering a partnership that prioritizes mutual benefit for the populations of both countries as the diplomatic engagement between Dhaka and New Delhi moves forward.
