Few people know the love story of Bollywood Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan’s father Harivansh Rai Bachchan and mother Teji Bachchan. But this lyricist was a very close friend of both in Bollywood. He wrote a song about their love story, which is still famous today.
In 1966, the movie ‘Mera Saya’ starring Sunil Dutt and Sadhana was released. Along with the wonderful story of that movie, the songs were also very popular. A song from that movie was based on the love story of Amitabh Bachchan’s father Harivansh Rai Bachchan and his mother Teji Bachchan, which is still heard today. The song is ‘Jhumka Gira Re’.
Few people know that the lyricist of this song, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, was a very close friend of Teji and Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Teji Bachchan tells the story of these earrings during their love days, which the lyricist embeds in the lyrics. Later, Raja Mehdi gave birth to the song with this earring.
Amitabh Bachchan and his family have always kept their lives private. So not many know that Amitabh Bachchan’s father Harivansh Rai Bachchan also had a love story. He was married twice. After the death of his first wife Shyama Bachchan, he fell in love with Teji Suri. But the story of their love and first meeting was special.
This incident happened at the time when India and Pakistan were not divided. At that time the lyricist often came from his home in Pakistan to Bareilly for work. At that time this city was the place where Teji Suri, daughter of Sardar Khazan Singh of Lahore, and Harivamsh began their love affair.
Harivansh Rai reached his home in Bareilly to meet his professor friend Jyoti Prakash. At that time Teji Suri was also there as a guest and got engaged to a foreigner. But Teji did not want that marriage. So when Harivansh Rai and Teji Suri first met, both were heartbroken. Then they met again at a party. At the end of the party, a friend asks Harivansh to recite a poem. After much refraining, he recited a poem, after which Teji could not hold back his tears. Same happened with Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Then lyricist Raja Mehdi Ali Khan met Teji Suri at an event. During this meeting, Raja asked him about marriage, when he and Harivansh Rai Bachchan will get married. In response to such a question, Teji said, “My earrings have fallen in Bareilly market.”
Raja Mehdi remembered Teji Bachchan’s words for many years. And he wrote a song on this line – ‘Jhumka gira re bareili ke bazaar mein’. Later in 1941, Amitabh’s parents got married. Their love is fulfilled.
