Court orders arrest of former MP Tanvir Imam in Gulshan attempted murder case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the formal arrest of Tanvir Imam, former member of parliament for Sirajganj-4, in connection with the attempted murder of van driver Abdul Jabbar during the July uprising. Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman issued the directive following a hearing held in the presence of the accused.

Police officials stated that investigations into the July 19 incident indicate Imam’s involvement in orchestrating the violence. According to Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam of the Gulshan Police Station, evidence suggests that Imam provided financial support and issued direct orders for activists to fire upon protesters near Confidence Tower in the capital’s Shahzadpur area.

Jabbar Ali Howladar, the victim of the shooting, filed the attempted murder case on December 11, 2024, naming 109 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The complaint details how peaceful demonstrators were targeted by police and political party cadres, leaving the van driver critically wounded.

Imam was initially taken into custody on September 18, 2024, in the Gulshan area and was subsequently remanded to prison the following day in relation to a separate murder case filed at the Badda Police Station. While incarcerated, law enforcement petitioned the court to include him as a suspect in the Gulshan case, prompting Tuesday’s proceedings to formalize his arrest for the pending charges.
