RAB arrests key suspect in Dhaka BNP leader murder case

Elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) forces have arrested Monowar Hossain, an individual suspected of supplying the weapon used in the fatal stabbing of local opposition leader Abul Bashar Badsha. The arrest was carried out late Tuesday night during an operation in the Mohammadia Housing Society area of Dhaka’s Mohammadpur neighborhood.
The incident dates back to July 1, when a disagreement over a FIFA World Cup match between Japan and Brazil escalated into a violent clash in the Nobodoy Housing area of Adabor. During the confrontation, Abul Bashar Badsha, the general secretary of the Nobodoy Housing unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was fatally stabbed.
During a press briefing at the RAB Media Center in Karwan Bazar on Wednesday, RAB-2 Commander Naymul Hassan confirmed that Monowar Hossain—also known as Ledu Hasan—provided the murder weapon to the primary suspect, identified as Parvez. This information was corroborated by the judicial testimonies of other suspects previously taken into custody in connection with the homicide.
The suspect holds a history of political and criminal affiliations. According to Adabor Thana BNP sources, Hossain served as a joint convener of the local unit but was expelled on two separate occasions for violating party discipline. Following the murder of Badsha, allegations surfaced linking him directly to the orchestration of the attack.
Hossain’s criminal record is extensive, with 32 cases pending against him across various police stations in the capital, covering charges ranging from homicide and extortion to narcotics trafficking and illegal arms possession. He was previously named in the 2010 murder case of Ohiduzzaman, which resulted in a two-year imprisonment. More recently, in 2021, he was apprehended with a foreign-made pistol and ammunition, an offense for which he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Local authorities noted that Hossain has long been the subject of complaints from residents regarding his alleged involvement in organized extortion, broader terrorist activities, and the patronage of local street gangs. Law enforcement officials stated that this arrest marks a significant breakthrough in their ongoing investigation into the politically charged murder of the BNP official.
