ঢাকায় তল্লাশি করে ব্যাগে প্রায় ২৬ লাখ টাকা পেয়ে জব্দ করেছে পুলিশ, গ্রেপ্তার ২

Police in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area arrested two individuals late Wednesday after discovering approximately 2.6 million taka in cash during a routine security check. The arrests occurred near the Liberation War Museum when officers stopped a rickshaw and found 2.59 million taka inside a passenger’s bag.
The individuals in custody have been identified as 25-year-old Md. Israfil and 40-year-old Salma Akter Jhorna. According to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Monirul Islam, the authorities initiated the search at approximately 10:00 p.m.
During interrogation, Md. Israfil failed to provide a credible explanation for the large sum of cash. He initially claimed that he was acting as a courier and had been instructed by a woman to deliver the money to the Shyamoli neighborhood. Shortly thereafter, Salma Akter Jhorna arrived at the scene and claimed ownership of the funds, asserting that the money belonged to her husband, who is a businessman. However, she also failed to provide documentation or a satisfactory explanation regarding the origin of the currency.
The suspects were subsequently detained under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which allows for arrests based on reasonable suspicion. Both individuals were processed through the court and remanded to prison.
Officer Monirul Islam stated that the court has been formally notified of the seizure. He noted that the police are currently awaiting evidence from the suspects to verify the legitimacy of the funds. If the detained individuals fail to provide proof of the legal source of the money, authorities will proceed with filing a formal case under the Money Laundering Prevention Act.
