Post-mortem examinations completed for woman and two daughters found dead in Barguna government guest house

Authorities in Barguna have concluded the autopsies of a female employee and her two young daughters, whose bodies were recovered from the district council’s guest house on Wednesday. While the investigation remains ongoing, the incident has sparked a heated conflict between local police, who suspect suicide, and the grieving family, who maintain that the trio was murdered.
The victims were identified as 34-year-old Iti Rani, a temporary cleaner at the guest house, and her daughters, 11-year-old Aradhya Biswas and 3-year-old Anuradha Biswas. Their bodies were discovered in two separate rooms on the third floor of the facility, located in the Thanapara area, on Wednesday afternoon.
Barguna Superintendent of Police (SP) Kudrat-e-Khuda stated that investigators discovered sleeping pills and a water bottle near the body of the eldest daughter. Emphasizing that both rooms were locked from the inside, the SP suggested the incident appeared to be a premeditated act driven by personal or family distress.
However, the family of the deceased has vehemently rejected the police department’s initial assessment. Speaking to the media, the victim’s sister-in-law, Moni Rani, criticized law enforcement for labeling the deaths as suicide before a comprehensive investigation had even begun. The family’s suspicions are further fueled by the testimony of the victim’s brother, Mitra Sarkar, who noted that Iti Rani was not scheduled to work on the day of the incident. Sarkar also raised concerns regarding the surveillance evidence, pointing out that only five to six minutes of CCTV footage were released, despite his sister having been at the facility for several hours.
Responding to the backlash, SP Kudrat-e-Khuda noted that the family’s accusations are likely a byproduct of extreme emotional distress. He maintained that the police are relying on available evidence, including the security footage and the fact that the rooms were secured from within. He assured that the final cause of death will be confirmed once the official forensic reports are released, at which point further legal action will be determined.
The incident has also highlighted potential security shortcomings at the district council guest house. Site supervisor Nurul Islam acknowledged that the balconies of the rooms lack security grills, leaving occupants vulnerable. As the investigation proceeds, the family continues to demand a more thorough inquiry, questioning the circumstances that led the mother and her daughters to the facility on their day off.
