The High Court on Monday granted interim bail to former parliamentarian and folk singer Momtaz Begum in three separate criminal cases. A bench comprising Justice Md. Khairul Alam and Justice A.K.M. Rabiul Hassan issued the bail order alongside a rule following a hearing on the petitions filed by the former lawmaker.

Despite the court’s decision, legal counsel noted that Begum will remain in custody for the time being as she faces additional charges in other pending cases.

Momtaz Begum, who served multiple terms as an Awami League lawmaker representing the Manikganj-2 constituency, has been incarcerated since last May. She was apprehended by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch at a residence in the capital’s Dhanmondi area. Following her initial appearance in court, she was remanded to judicial custody to face various charges, including murder, filed across multiple police stations in Dhaka.

The three cases addressed in Monday’s High Court ruling involve a murder charge and an attempted murder charge originating from Ashulia, as well as a separate murder case filed with the Mirpur Model Police Station. The singer had previously sought bail in lower courts but was unsuccessful, prompting her legal team to escalate the petitions to the High Court.
