Dhaka Authorities Launch Investigation Into Deadly Mirpur College Wall Collapse

Authorities in Dhaka are launching a high-level investigation into a wall collapse at Mirpur College that left three people dead and several others injured on Tuesday. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan announced the formation of a joint probe committee comprising representatives from the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK), the Public Works Department, and the DNCC to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
The collapse occurred while a crowd had gathered at the site to purchase essential goods from a Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) queue. Emergency responders transported the injured to local hospitals, where they are currently receiving treatment. According to the DNCC administrator, the government has ensured that all medical costs for the victims will be covered, in accordance with directives from the Prime Minister, and authorities are evaluating options to provide additional financial support to the affected families.

Initial assessments suggest that structural integrity issues played a critical role in the tragedy. Mr. Islam noted that the wall, which was constructed in 2014, reportedly lacked the necessary reinforcements. Preliminary findings indicate the structure was built using basic brickwork rather than the required reinforced cement concrete (RCC) framework.
Following a site inspection alongside local officials, including Member of Parliament Sanjida Islam Tuli and the DNCC chief engineer, the administrator pledged that the findings of the investigative report will lead to legal action against those found responsible for the negligence. He further stated that the college administration will be required to collaborate with city authorities to evaluate and fortify the remaining structures on campus to prevent future hazards.
