Death Toll Climbs to Three Following Wall Collapse at Dhaka TCB Sales Point

A wall collapse in the Mirpur area of Dhaka has claimed the life of a third victim, bringing the death toll to three following a tragic incident at a subsidized government goods distribution site on Tuesday. Fifty-year-old Beauty Begum, who had been receiving treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), succumbed to her injuries late Tuesday night.

The disaster occurred around 1:30 p.m. behind Mirpur University College, where a large crowd had gathered to purchase essential commodities from trucks operated by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB). As residents stood in line to take advantage of the state-subsidized pricing, a brick wall suddenly collapsed onto the queue, trapping several people beneath the rubble.

According to Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman, Begum, a native of Joypurhat’s Kalai upazila, had been living in a rented residence near the site. The other two victims were identified as 44-year-old Nasima Begum, a cleaner at a local technical school, and 43-year-old Firoz, a local resident.

Local authorities confirmed that seven other individuals sustained injuries during the collapse and are currently receiving medical care. Three of the wounded—Raziya Begum, Monowara Begum, and Mosharraf Hossain—are being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for fractures and crush injuries. Raziya Begum’s daughter, Mahfuza Akter, stated that her mother had been on her way to a nearby market when she stopped at the TCB truck, unaware of the impending danger.

Police officials noted that the area behind the college is a frequent site for TCB distribution, drawing large numbers of low-income residents seeking relief from rising commodity costs. Emergency responders and bystanders worked quickly to clear the debris and transport the wounded to nearby hospitals following the collapse. Investigations into the structural integrity of the wall that failed are ongoing.
