CUET student drowns in campus pond during evening swim

A 22-year-old student at the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) died Tuesday evening after drowning in a pond adjacent to his residential hall. The victim, Arnab Saha, was a seventh-semester student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The tragedy unfolded at approximately 7:00 p.m. when Arnab and several classmates went to the pond near the Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall to bathe following their afternoon tutoring sessions. According to fellow students, Arnab went missing while in the water. His body was recovered by a student approximately 20 minutes later near the pond’s landing area.

University medical officer Dr. Rajesh Deb confirmed that despite immediate attempts to revive the student through CPR upon arrival at the campus health center, Arnab showed no signs of life, suggesting he had succumbed while submerged. Questions have since emerged from peers regarding how the incident went unnoticed by other students frequenting the pond area at the time, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation.

Arnab’s body was transported to his family’s residence in Feni, arriving in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The scene at his home was one of profound grief as his mother, Nelly Saha, mourned the loss of her youngest child. Known as a dedicated and academically gifted student, Arnab maintained a high GPA and served as the General Secretary of the Mechanical Engineering department’s “ASHRAE” club.

Born in Feni to Prabir Ranjan Saha, a retired teacher, and Nelly Saha, Arnab was remembered by neighbors and peers as a polite, humble, and hardworking individual who juggled rigorous academics with part-time tutoring to support his personal expenses. Neighbors described him as a rare talent whose sudden death has left the community in shock.

Arnab’s funeral rites were held Wednesday morning at the Feni Municipal Crematorium. The service was attended by approximately 70 of his classmates, who traveled from the university in two buses to pay their final respects, alongside two members of the CUET faculty.
