Former IGP Mamun may be an accused in the Shapla Chattar case: Chief Prosecutor

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun may be charged with crimes against humanity in connection with the killings and torture that took place at Shapla Square in Motijheel of the capital on May 5, 2013. The International Criminal Tribunal-1 sentenced former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun to five years in prison on November 17 last year in a case for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. He is currently in prison. Deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan were sentenced to death in that case. These two convicts who were sentenced to death are absconding and are in India.
In his office, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam told Prothom Alo today that he is receiving or has already received evidence against former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun in the Shapla square incident. That is why he can be involved in this case.
Referring to his involvement in the crossfire incident while in RAB, the chief prosecutor said that the involvement of this former IGP is also found in the disappearance incident. In cases where his involvement is found, he will be brought under the law.
The chief prosecutor also said that the investigation report and formal complaint may be submitted in the case of Shapla Chattar within the next 10 to 15 days.
