Chittagong police arrest wanted fugitive David Emon near Indian border

Chittagong police have apprehended notorious criminal Mubarak Hossain, known as “David” Emon, along with three of his associates following a high-stakes pursuit that spanned multiple districts. Emon, a key operative for the fugitive gang leader Sajjad Ali, was intercepted by law enforcement in the Jhumjhumpur area of Jashore at dawn on Wednesday while attempting to flee to India.
According to Chittagong District Superintendent of Police (SP) Masud Alam, the arrest concludes a complex investigation into a series of violent crimes, including the high-profile murder of Jubo Dal leader Masudul Haque Chowdhury in the Pahartali area of Rauzan on June 13. Intelligence gathered from the earlier arrest of another suspect, Elias—also known as “Dhama Elias”—in July proved instrumental in tracking Emon’s underground network and his involvement in racketeering, including a recent attempt to extort two crore taka from an internet service provider.
Emon, who faces at least 15 criminal cases, was known for his sophisticated evasion tactics. He eschewed standard communication methods, relying instead on foreign SIM cards and encrypted mobile applications to coordinate with his associates and the exiled Sajjad Ali. Authorities discovered an Indian Aadhaar card in Emon’s possession, issued under the alias “Azhar Khan,” which he intended to use to establish a permanent hideout across the border.
The pursuit of Emon involved a multi-district operation across Daudkandi, the Padma Bridge, and Khulna. Despite Emon’s frequent changes in vehicles, routes, and drivers to shake off surveillance, police managed to corner him in Jashore with the assistance of local law enforcement. During the same period, police attempted to capture another top-tier operative, Raihan, in Noakhali, but he managed to evade capture by fleeing across rooftops after media reports of Emon’s arrest alerted him to the operation.
Police describe Emon as a highly skilled gunman responsible for managing a network of approximately 50 shooters and associates under the direction of the fugitive “Big” Sajjad. Following the incarceration of Sajjad’s former lieutenant, “Small” Sajjad, Emon and Raihan took control of the gang’s criminal operations in Chittagong. Investigators allege that Emon was directly involved in several high-profile incidents, including a double murder in Bakalia and the killing of a criminal known as “Dhakaiya” Akbar at Patenga sea beach.
SP Masud Alam stated that the police have filed a request for a 10-day remand to facilitate further interrogation regarding the suspect’s arsenal and broader network. While authorities are currently investigating the extent of the gang’s activities, officials noted there is no evidence yet of political patrons behind the group’s operations. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the suspects took advantage of a temporary lull in security vigilance following the events of August 5, but warned that criminals operating in Chittagong will continue to face rigorous prosecution.
