Fire at Moghbazar Substation Disrupts Power Supply Across Dhaka

A fire at an electrical substation in Dhaka’s Moghbazar neighborhood disrupted power supplies across several key areas of the capital on Saturday afternoon, leaving thousands of residents and businesses without electricity for hours. The incident, which occurred near Hatirjheel around 3:30 p.m., prompted an immediate response from the Tejgaon fire service, which deployed three units to bring the blaze under control.
The Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) reported that the outage initially affected approximately 80,000 customers in areas including Karwan Bazar, Tejgaon, Bangla Motor, Moghbazar, New Eskaton, Kakrail, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Power distribution officials worked through the afternoon to restore service via alternative lines, successfully reconnecting 60,000 customers within the first two hours of the incident.

According to DPDC Chief Engineer Mohammad Tarikul Haque, the fire was triggered by a “flashing” event at the Moghbazar substation, which resulted in significant damage to two circuit breakers and several power cables. While the majority of the grid has been stabilized, approximately 23,000 customers in the Begunbari area of Hatirjheel and the Tejgaon industrial zone remain without electricity.
Repair crews are currently working to address the damaged infrastructure. DPDC officials have expressed confidence that power will be restored in phases to the remaining affected areas by 10:30 p.m.
