Elderly mute station cleaner robbed and assaulted in Narsingdi

A 70-year-old woman, known to the community of Narsingdi’s Methikanda railway station as a diligent and humble cleaner, was hospitalized following a brutal robbery in her home late Saturday night. The victim, who is mute and has resided at the station for more than two decades, was assaulted by a group of intruders who raided the derelict room where she lived, seizing her life savings.
For over 20 years, the woman, identified as Bobi Begum, became a fixture at the Methikanda station. Despite her disabilities, she dedicated her life to maintaining the cleanliness of the platforms and facilities. Local residents and daily commuters often provided her with food or small monetary gifts as a gesture of appreciation, and it was these modest contributions that she meticulously saved over the decades.

According to station master S.M. Jashim, the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. when several individuals forced their way into her room. When she refused to surrender her savings, the attackers beat her severely before fleeing with the stolen cash. The assault triggered widespread public outrage, with calls for swift justice circulating across social media platforms.
Raypura police station officer-in-charge Mojibur Rahman confirmed that investigators have reviewed station CCTV footage and identified three to four suspects, believed to be local drug users. While the suspects have since gone into hiding, a manhunt is currently underway to apprehend them.

In the wake of the attack, local authorities have stepped in to ensure the victim’s safety and well-being. Raypura Upazila Executive Officer Masud Rana stated that the administration has provided Bobi Begum with immediate financial support, essential food supplies, and comprehensive medical care. Furthermore, local government officials have committed to securing her living space at the station to ensure she can reside there safely for the remainder of her life.
