The Chittagong Metropolitan Branch of the Jatiya Nagrik Party (NCP) has alleged that the Chittagong City Corporation (CHASIC) has ordered the removal of graffiti commemorating the July mass uprising. In protest of this, the party has organized the ‘July graffiti drawing’ program.

This program was held in front of the entrance of Chasik office in the Tiger Pass area of the city on Sunday evening. Earlier in the afternoon, NCP leaders and workers complained that the graffiti of the July movement painted on the pillars of Shaheed Wasim Akram Udalsad has been removed.

NCP leaders said that at least four pillars in front of the entrance gate of the City Corporation in the Tiger Pass area have been painted with white and yellow graffiti. After a few related pictures were spread on social media, NCP leaders claimed that these graffitis were removed on the orders of City Mayor Shahadat Hossain.

The NCP leaders and workers started expressing their anger in this incident from the afternoon. However, Chasik’s public relations wing issued a press release around six in the evening saying that no such instructions were given. It is said that no decision has been taken to remove July’s graffiti anywhere in the city on the orders of Chittagong City Mayor Shahadat Hossain.

The mayor’s notice also said that no specific instructions were given by him to remove any artwork, educational or social awareness graffiti. Such directives are out of the question, especially in the case of graffiti commemorating the July mass uprising. It is also urged not to spread confusion in this regard.

However, after that statement, the NCP leaders and workers held a protest march around 7:30 in the evening. Later, they painted different slogans on the road in front of the Ambagan-facing entrance of Chasik. Nagar NCP convener Mir Mohammad Shoaib, member secretary Arif Moinuddin, senior joint member secretary Nizam Uddin and other leaders were present in the program.

Nagar NCP member secretary Arif Moinuddin told reporters, “Since becoming mayor, the law and order situation in the city has deteriorated. Even though people are suffering due to flooding, no effective initiative is seen to solve the problem. Among them, the graffiti commemorating the July Movement was removed and there was written Contact for advertisement. We will say to the mayor, your term is over, please step down.’
