Dhaka police arrest suspect in murder of notorious gang leader Khandaker Teton

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested a suspect identified as Roni, also known as “Bhangari Roni,” in connection with the murder of notorious gang leader Khandaker Naim Ahmed Titon. The arrest took place late Tuesday night in the Mohammadpur area of the capital, according to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rezaul Karim of the DB’s Ramna division.
Titon, who was among the 23 most-wanted criminals listed by the government in 2001, was fatally shot on the night of April 28 near the Shahnewaz Hall of Dhaka University, adjacent to the New Market area. Following the attack, the victim’s brother, Khandaker Sayeed Akhter Ripon, filed a formal murder case at the New Market Police Station. While Roni is a named suspect in the First Information Report (FIR), investigators are currently working to determine the extent of his direct involvement in the execution of the crime.

At the time of his death, authorities suggested that Titon was likely killed due to internal feuds among top-tier criminal syndicates. The victim, who was the brother-in-law of another prominent gang leader, Sanjidul Islam Emon, had a criminal history spanning decades. Entering the underworld in the early 1990s, Titon rose to prominence by leading various criminal cells and establishing an extensive illegal arms trafficking network.
Titon faced numerous criminal charges throughout his life, most notably for the murder of businessman Babar Elahi, a case in which he was sentenced to death in 2014. Despite his conviction, he was granted bail and released from custody on August 12, 2024. Following his release, he had been living in hiding until the fatal incident in April. Investigative sources confirmed that law enforcement had previously apprehended him in the Dhaka Cantonment area in 2004, marking a long history of intermittent incarceration before his recent death.
