Rajshahi Medical College Hospital Reports Season’s First Dengue Case in Toddler Recovering From Measles

A 18-month-old child has been admitted to the intensive care unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital after testing positive for dengue fever, marking the facility’s first case of the mosquito-borne illness this season. The infant, identified as Taiba, was transferred to the hospital following a recent recovery from a severe bout of measles.
Taiba, the daughter of a farmer from the Amla Chowdhurypara village in Kushtia’s Mirpur upazila, was initially hospitalized earlier this month with symptoms of high fever and coughing, followed by a measles-related rash. After spending 12 days undergoing treatment and receiving the necessary vaccinations, she was discharged. However, her condition deteriorated again last Wednesday when the fever and cough returned. Following medical advice, her family relocated her to the Rajshahi facility on Friday night.
Dr. Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, the physician in charge of the hospital’s intensive care unit, noted that the child’s clinical presentation was highly concerning upon admission. Initial blood tests revealed a significantly high white blood cell count coupled with a dangerously low platelet count. Subsequent diagnostic testing at the hospital’s laboratory confirmed the dengue diagnosis on Sunday morning.
The child’s father, Jahidul Islam, expressed desperation over his daughter’s precarious health, stating he is prepared to do everything within his means to secure her survival. Medical staff at the hospital are currently providing round-the-clock care, acknowledging the severity of the child’s condition as she faces the dual burden of recovering from measles while battling a dengue infection.
