Students locked the proctor’s office in connection with the attempted rape in Jahangirnagar

Protesting the incident of attempted rape of a student of Jahangirnagar University, the protesting students have declared the proctorial team of the university as ‘unwanted’. They alleged that the administration failed to arrest the culprits besides hiding information about the incident, creating confusion and cheating the students.

The students made this announcement at a press conference organized at the end of the protest program in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence at around 10:30 this Saturday morning. After the press conference, they broke the locks of the two doors of the university proctor’s office and hung new locks. At the same time, he also announced the plan to block the new administrative building from tomorrow, Sunday.

Farzana Tabassum, General Secretary of Parliament, read the written statement at the press conference. He said, the day after the incident of rape and attempted murder in the university on May 12, the women students raised six-point demands to the administration on May 13. At the same time, a 48-hour ultimatum was given to arrest the culprit. In the context of the expiry of that period, they started a sit-in program in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence from two o’clock on Thursday night.

Farzana Tabassum said one of the main demands of the protesters was the resignation of the Proctoral Team if they failed to arrest the culprits within 48 hours. But even after the stipulated time, the criminal was not arrested. On the contrary, they alleged that the administration has consistently misled the students and tried to evade their responsibilities. On May 13, he assured to accept the demands raised before the Vice-Chancellor and acknowledged it by signing. But later the administration publicly denied that position. They referred to this as ‘administrative dishonesty’ and ‘dishonesty’ with students.

It was also said in the press conference that some female students fell ill during the all-night sit-in program in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence. However, they continued the program. Even though he stayed till half past nine in the morning, he did not get any effective initiative from the administration; Instead, they claimed that they had to face insensitive behavior and attempts to avoid responsibility. Proctor did not appear before the agitators until dawn. Later, coming out of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence, Proctor called the protesting women students ‘conspirators’. According to them, this statement is irresponsible and an attempt to denigrate the movement.

The agitators announced that they will blockade the new administrative building of the university from tomorrow until their demands are met.

Before this, the female students took a stand in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence at around two o’clock on Friday night. As the accused was not arrested within the stipulated 48 hours, the students started a movement demanding the resignation of the proctor and the proctorial team. After staying all night, the students returned to the hall after announcing the new program around 10:30 this morning.
