Jashore Lawmaker Facing Protests After Altercation at Local Madrasa

A long-standing dispute over a local access road escalated into violence Tuesday in Jashore, as residents attacked the residence of local Member of Parliament Golam Rasul following a confrontation at a nearby religious school. The incident, which occurred around 11:00 a.m. at the MP’s home in the Nilganj area, resulted in significant property damage and left the lawmaker and his family under police guard.
Tensions have been simmering for some time between the family of Rasul, who represents the Jashore-4 constituency and serves as the district head of Jamaat-e-Islami, and the students and staff of the Al-Madrasatush Sharayah mosque and school situated directly in front of his home. The conflict intensified Monday when the MP’s daughter, Ananya, allegedly intimidated students, requiring police intervention to reach a temporary resolution.

The situation spiraled on Tuesday morning after the MP and his daughter entered the school premises to confront teachers and parents. According to eyewitnesses, the dispute turned physical when Ananya allegedly struck a local woman, identified as Rexana, causing a head injury, and subsequently accosted a parent named Nasir Uddin. The confrontation infuriated the local community, leading crowds to surround the MP’s residence, where the family took shelter behind locked gates.
Demonstrators claimed that the family had repeatedly threatened to shut down the school, fueling public resentment. Protesters gathered outside the home to demand a formal investigation and legal action against those involved in the assaults.

In a bid to de-escalate the crisis, Rasul broadcasted a video on social media from inside his home, acknowledging the long-standing conflict regarding the access road, which he maintained was purchased with his own funds. Expressing regret for the altercation, he issued an apology to the community, stating his desire to live in harmony with his neighbors. He further suggested that his daughter struggles with mental health issues and has received medical treatment in both India and Bangladesh.
Rasul expressed deep fear for his safety during the broadcast, alleging that protesters had threatened to set his residence ablaze. However, police maintained a firm presence at the scene to prevent further violence. Jashore Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masum Khan confirmed that the family remains under protective custody, noting that while the department is aware of the situation and the lawmaker’s safety concerns, the MP’s specific statements on social media are considered his own personal perspective.
