Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) have arrested 32 individuals in a sustained crackdown targeting organized crime, extortion, and narcotics trafficking across the city. The operation, which spanned from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, marks the latest effort in a week-long campaign that has resulted in the detention of 402 suspects.

The coordinated sweep involved personnel from multiple police stations alongside the Detective Branch. Among those apprehended were individuals identified by authorities as key criminal figures, including Rana, known locally as “Gajal Rana,” and several prolific drug traffickers. Police also took into custody suspected members of the “Ashik Group,” as well as Lenins Hawlader, Hossain Munshi, Nayan, and Hafizul, all of whom face pending charges ranging from murder and extortion to drug-related offenses.

Despite the high number of arrests, public concern remains elevated as several high-profile gang leaders continue to evade capture. Local residents attribute the persistent atmosphere of insecurity to inconsistent police oversight, which has allowed various criminal factions to consolidate power. Intelligence reports suggest at least nine distinct gangs currently operate within the city and district, including the notorious “B-Company,” led by Rony Chowdhury, also known as “Grenade Babu,” as well as the groups managed by Sheikh Palash, Humayun Kabir, and others.

The intensity of the police intervention follows a surge in violence throughout the year. According to official data, 16 murders were recorded in Khulna between January and May. Furthermore, investigations indicate that various criminal syndicates are linked to 34 homicides that occurred following recent political shifts in the country. The uptick in violence and the subsequent police response have drawn significant scrutiny toward the city’s law enforcement strategies and the overall efficacy of crime control measures in the region.
