Students Block Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway Following Fatal Road Accident in Gazipur

Students from Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasa blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in the Gazipura area of Tongi, Gazipur, on Sunday to protest the death of a classmate in a road accident. The demonstration, which began in the morning in front of the madrasa and at the Gazipura bus stand, caused significant traffic congestion and hampered vehicular movement on the busy arterial route.
The victim, 17-year-old Yasin Ali, a ninth-grade student, was killed on Saturday evening while attempting to cross the highway. Yasin, the son of Ripon Mia from Neyapara in Sujanagar, Pabna, resided with his family in the Gazipura Kazipara area.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. when a speeding covered van struck Yasin near the Gazipura bus stand. He sustained severe head injuries and suffered excessive blood loss. Although he was transported to Tongi Government Hospital by police and local residents, attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival.
The driver of the covered van fled the scene immediately following the collision. Police have since seized the vehicle and relocated it to Tongi East Police Station. Law enforcement officials confirmed that efforts to identify and apprehend the driver are ongoing.
Protesting students highlighted the lack of adequate safety measures for pedestrians at the high-traffic Gazipura bus stand. Demonstrators demanded the immediate installation of speed breakers to regulate traffic and called for the construction of a foot-overbridge to ensure safe crossing for students and residents. They further urged authorities to implement stricter measures to control vehicle speeds and prevent future fatalities.
Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan stated that authorities are currently engaging with the students in an effort to bring the situation under control and restore traffic flow.
