RAB arrests five suspects including key accused in Mohammadpur gang leader murder case

Elite units of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) have arrested five individuals, including Zahirul Islam, also known as Bipul, in connection with the murder of gang leader Alex Emon in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area. Authorities recovered a cache of domestic and foreign firearms during the operation.
RAB-2 Commanding Officer Naymul Hasan disclosed the details during a press briefing at the RAB Media Center in Karwan Bazar on Friday. The arrests mark a significant progression in the investigation into the April 12 incident, where Emon was fatally stabbed in broad daylight near the Rayer Bazar embankment in Mohammadpur. A case was filed at the Mohammadpur Police Station naming 20 suspects. With these latest arrests, RAB has apprehended a total of five suspects involved in the case.
The operation was launched late Thursday night following intelligence reports that armed suspects had gathered in the Kholamora area of Keraniganj’s Shakta Union. A RAB-2 team subsequently apprehended Md. Hridoy, 23, Sujan, 22, and Sohel, alias China Sohel, 26, in the Kolchar area. Officers seized a foreign pistol, live ammunition, two swords, and three samurai swords from the group. Further operations in the Kholamora area led to the arrest of Rabbi, alias Pinjira Rabbi, 22, who was found in possession of a single-barrel shotgun, five rounds of ammunition, and a samurai sword.
Acting on information provided by Rabbi, investigators tracked down Zahirul Islam, listed as the seventh accused in the Emon murder case. A foreign pistol was also recovered from his possession. According to RAB officials, all five suspects have extensive criminal records involving murder, robbery, narcotics, and theft.
RAB records indicate that Zahirul Islam faces six criminal cases across Mohammadpur and Itna Police Stations. The other suspects also maintain significant criminal histories: Sujan is implicated in eight cases, Sohel in four, Hridoy in three, and Rabbi in four separate cases.
Addressing the broader issue of gang violence in Mohammadpur, Commander Naymul Hasan asserted that active street gangs have been suppressed in the area. He stated that law enforcement has increased vigilance to prevent a resurgence, specifically by intensifying motorcycle and pickup truck patrols during nighttime hours. Authorities are currently focusing special surveillance on areas identified as high-risk to ensure continued security.
