Hospitalized Student Overcomes Hepatitis B to Achieve Perfect GPA in SSC Exams

MATLAB SOUTH, CHANDPUR — A 16-year-old student has achieved a perfect GPA-5 in her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations despite battling a severe case of Hepatitis B that required prolonged hospitalization.

Sumaiya Khanam Ivana, a student at Matlabganj Pilot Girls’ High School, fell ill just 20 days before the examinations were set to begin. Suffering from high fever, persistent vomiting, and extreme physical weakness, she was diagnosed with Hepatitis B. Following her first exam on April 21, her condition deteriorated, forcing her admission to a private hospital in Chandpur.

Throughout the examination period, Ivana balanced intensive medical treatment with her academic responsibilities. She frequently obtained temporary medical leave from her physicians, traveling approximately 20 kilometers by autorickshaw to reach her testing center, only to return to her hospital bed immediately after each paper. According to her family, her bilirubin levels remained critically high, exceeding 13, throughout the duration of the tests.

Ivana is the eldest of three children born to expatriate Amir Khan and homemaker Khadija Akter of Nabakalas village in the Matlab South Upazila. While her father remained abroad, her mother provided constant bedside care and support during the ordeal. Khadija Akter noted that her daughter’s determination to complete her education was the driving force behind her resilience, even when her participation in the exams appeared uncertain.

The headmaster of Matlabganj Pilot Girls’ High School, Md. Shah Alam, praised Ivana’s fortitude, noting that her performance serves as a powerful example of perseverance. Her school reported an 81 percent pass rate this year, with 165 out of 205 students passing and 18, including Ivana, achieving a GPA-5.

Matlab South Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) K.M. Ishmam described Ivana’s success as an inspirational achievement for the student body.

Expressing gratitude toward her parents and teachers, Ivana stated that she aspires to become a teacher. She expressed a commitment to guiding future students not only in their academic pursuits but also in their development as individuals with high moral character.
