Court Sends 52 Suspects to Jail in Anti-Sabotage Case in Bashundhara Residential Area

A Dhaka court on Friday ordered 52 individuals to be sent to jail and two minors to a juvenile detention center following their arrest in the Bashundhara Residential Area on charges of plotting acts of sabotage.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order after the accused were presented before the court. Sub-Inspector Kamal Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution department confirmed the development, noting that one woman is among those detained.
The case was initiated by Sub-Inspector Asaduzzaman of Bhatara Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act. According to court documents, police raided a residence on Road 28 in Block M of the Bashundhara Residential Area on Thursday night. Authorities allege that the group, which includes members of the Awami League, Jubo Mohila League, and the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, had gathered to orchestrate subversive activities ahead of August 15.
During the operation, police seized three banners, two iPhones, and one Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra smartphone. The banners reportedly featured photographs of political leaders and inscriptions regarding a memorial meeting and prayer service scheduled for August 15. Police further alleged that the suspects were chanting anti-government slogans and intended to incite public panic and instability under the guise of a political program.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Hafizur Rahman of Bhatara Police Station, requested that the accused be held in custody pending further investigation. In his filing, the officer noted that preliminary interrogations corroborated the allegations, and the suspects could potentially go into hiding if granted bail.
The accused were not brought to the courtroom during Friday’s proceedings, and no bail petitions were submitted on their behalf. The investigation into the matter remains ongoing.
