RAB Arrests Suspect in Mymensingh Youth Murder Motivated by Revenge

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-14 has arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a youth named Mohammad Rabbi in the Maskanda area of Mymensingh. The suspect, identified as Abdul Khalek, was apprehended in the Raghurampur area late Thursday night.

RAB-14 Company Commander Mohammad Samsuzzaman announced the arrest during a press conference at his office on Friday morning. According to investigators, the victim, 25-year-old Mohammad Rabbi, was attacked by a group of men armed with sharp weapons in front of the regional passport office in Maskanda on Thursday afternoon. Rabbi attempted to seek refuge in a nearby shop, but the assailants followed him inside and inflicted fatal injuries. When his brother, Muhammad Riyad, attempted to intervene, he was also attacked and wounded. Rabbi was later pronounced dead at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

During the press conference, Khalek admitted to his involvement in the killing, claiming the act was an act of vengeance for a past attack on his father, Fazlul Haque, in 2018. Khalek alleged that Rabbi and his associates had previously assaulted his father and severed his hand, fueling a long-standing feud. Furthermore, Khalek accused the victim of extortion, alleging that Rabbi demanded money from local business owners. Officials noted that while these claims are being investigated, their veracity remains unconfirmed.

RAB reported that the arrest was made within eight hours of the incident following an analysis of CCTV footage and the use of information technology. Preliminary questioning suggests the murder was pre-planned, with Khalek admitting to using a large cleaver during the assault. Authorities identified at least four individuals directly involved in the attack, with suspicions that an additional group of eight to 10 people may have provided support.

Following the killing on Thursday evening, agitated locals set fire to the homes of the accused. Police and fire service personnel were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames and restore order. Mohammad Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed that the victim’s father, Mobarak Hossain, has filed a formal case naming 11 suspects, with three to four unidentified individuals also listed.

RAB officials stated they are investigating whether a mediation meeting held between the two parties the day before the murder is linked to the motive. Law enforcement agencies are continuing operations to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the attack.
