Meta Expresses Interest in Establishing Local CDN and Permanent Office in Bangladesh

Technology giant Meta has expressed interest in establishing Content Delivery Network (CDN) edge nodes in Bangladesh and is positively considering the establishment of a permanent local office, according to a statement from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
The commitment was conveyed during a meeting held Thursday at the BTRC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka. A delegation from Meta, led by Yuen Ting Che, Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, met with BTRC Chairman Major General (Retd.) Emdad Ul Bari to discuss the company’s expansion plans in the country.
The BTRC delegation, which included Vice Chairman Md. Abu Bakar Siddique and Director General of Systems and Services Brigadier General Shahzad Parvez Mohiuddin, highlighted the significant volume of Bangladeshi users on Meta’s platforms. The commission urged the company to establish a physical office and expand business operations locally. The BTRC emphasized that the installation of local CDN or edge nodes would provide domestic users with faster, more reliable access to Meta’s services.
Addressing concerns regarding regulatory hurdles, Meta representatives noted that previous provisions in the draft Data Protection Ordinance had created legal complications for infrastructure development. However, they confirmed that the recently enacted Data Protection Act, 2026, has addressed those concerns, allowing the company to expedite its plans for local infrastructure.
During the discussions, the BTRC Chairman underscored the importance of implementing automated, artificial intelligence-based detection systems to curb fraudulent activities and gambling advertisements on Meta platforms. He also stressed the need for continued cooperation in preventing the spread of misinformation and rumors.
Regarding the timeline for these initiatives, Meta’s delegation explained that while global corporate restructuring had caused a temporary slowdown in some operations, they expect to resume normal workflows soon.
Ruzan Sarwar, Meta’s Head of Public Policy for Bangladesh and Nepal, expressed a strong commitment to collaborating closely with the BTRC. He stated that the company would conduct a thorough review of the technical and legal requirements for establishing local infrastructure and a permanent office before moving forward with the next steps. Other members of the Meta delegation included Matt Jansen, the company’s Head of Edge Strategy for the Asia-Pacific region.
