Student Wing Protests New Principal Appointment at Faridpur Medical College

Newly appointed principal of Faridpur Medical College, Professor Syed Asif-ul Alam, faced protests and attempts to block his assumption of office on Tuesday, as members of the student political organization Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) voiced opposition to his appointment.

The incident occurred at the college’s administrative office shortly after Professor Alam officially assumed his duties at 11:45 a.m., following the formal handover of responsibilities from the outgoing principal, Dilruba Jeba.

Professor Alam had been appointed to the position through a government notification issued on Monday, which instructed him to join the post by August 16. However, upon his arrival, a group of seven to eight individuals led by Mustakim Kabir, the general secretary of the college’s JCD unit, entered the office. The group attempted to obstruct the principal’s entry and engaged in a heated verbal altercation with members of the faculty. Local police from the Kotwali station were dispatched to the scene to maintain order.

Following the confrontation, the protesting group gathered in front of the principal’s office to display a banner labeling the appointee an “accomplice of fascism” and an “active member of Swachip,” the pro-Awami League doctors’ association.

Mustakim Kabir publicly denounced the appointment, alleging that Professor Alam maintains close ties with Awami League leadership. He further pointed out that although Professor Alam was briefly appointed as the convener of the Faridpur Medical College branch of the pro-BNP doctors’ association, DAB, on July 26, that committee was dissolved within two days. The JCD leaders demanded the immediate cancellation of his appointment, characterizing the move as the rehabilitation of elements associated with the previous regime.

In response to the allegations, Professor Syed Asif-ul Alam denied any wrongdoing or partisan bias. He confirmed that the joining process was completed successfully and extended his gratitude to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam and Member of Parliament for Faridpur-3, Chowdhury Nayab Yusuf Ahmed, for their support during the transition.
