Old HSC protest footage falsely linked to SSC exam results on social media

Social media platforms have been flooded with misleading videos falsely claiming that students who failed the recent Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations are protesting to demand the resignation of the Education Minister. The footage, which has circulated across more than 35 Facebook pages since the official release of SSC results on Monday, depicts students chanting slogans against the ministry.

Investigations have confirmed that the 19-second video is not related to the current SSC examination results. Forensic analysis and reverse image searches reveal that the footage was actually recorded on July 15, during a “long march” organized by Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinees who were protesting various grievances and demanding the resignation of the Education Minister.

Several prominent Facebook pages, including “The Politics” and “Nagorik Protidin,” have heavily promoted the false narrative. The video on “The Politics” alone has amassed over 2.5 million views, while “Nagorik Protidin” garnered one million views. The misleading context has led to widespread public misinformation, with numerous users commenting on the posts to criticize the students, unaware that the footage is months old.

The actual events of July 15 were covered by mainstream media outlets, which reported that students marched toward the Secretariat from Dhaka’s Science Lab and Nilkhet areas. That protest was sparked by a series of controversies, including widespread suffering caused by waterlogging during exams, allegations of derogatory remarks made by the Education Minister in a leaked phone call, and errors identified in physics question papers.

Mainstream news outlets and television channels have reported no instances of protests by failed SSC candidates following the recent announcement of results. The viral content is a recycled clip from the July demonstrations, misattributed to the current academic results to manufacture a false sense of unrest.
