Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urges BNP unity ahead of local government elections during Chittagong visit

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has directed party members to maintain party discipline and ensure the selection of single candidates for upcoming local government elections. Addressing roughly 600 party leaders and activists from Chittagong city, north, and south units at the Radisson Blu Bay View hotel on Sunday night, Rahman urged unity to counter political opposition and external conspiracies.
During his first meeting with local leaders since the formation of the current government, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of public service and the preservation of the party’s reputation. He cautioned members against involvement in land grabbing or any activities that could alienate the public. Rahman further instructed leaders to actively promote the administration’s policy successes, specifically highlighting the recent reduction in the prices of heart stents and sixty essential commodities.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Home Minister Salauddin Ahmed, and State Minister for Land Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin. Attendees reported that the directives were well-received, with members pledging to disseminate the message of responsible conduct to grassroots activists.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister inspected the 1,200-megawatt ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plant in Matarbari, Moheshkhali upazila, Cox’s Bazar. During the briefing, which lasted over an hour, officials provided detailed reports on the facility’s power generation capacity, fuel management, operational efficiency, and security infrastructure.
Following the site visit, the Prime Minister traveled by helicopter to Baharchhara in Banshkhali to preside over a relief distribution ceremony. During the event, he handed over the keys to new homes for 100 disadvantaged families. According to the district administration, the units were constructed using reinforced concrete pillars and storm-resistant materials to withstand the region’s frequent natural disasters. Additionally, the Ministry of Social Welfare distributed financial assistance to 15 people with disabilities, while the district administration provided relief supplies to 200 flood-affected households.
The Prime Minister’s itinerary concluded with a visit to Fatikchhari, where he met with Hefazat-e-Islam leader Allama Muhibbullah Babunagari to seek his blessings, followed by discussions with other senior leaders of the organization. He later paid his respects at the graves of former Hefazat-e-Islam chiefs Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi and Allama Junaid Babunagari in Hathazari, before addressing a public rally at the Hathazari Government College grounds.
