Police Defuse Improvised Explosive Device Found in Ashulia Grocery Store

Police in Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka, safely neutralized a sophisticated explosive device discovered inside a grocery store after it was abandoned by an unidentified individual late Thursday night.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the Charabagh area when a man wearing a face mask entered a local shop to purchase a soft drink. According to local authorities, the man provided a 200-taka note for payment, but when the shopkeeper left briefly to secure change from a neighboring business, the customer vanished, leaving behind a locked travel bag.
After the customer failed to return for an extended period, the shopkeeper alerted neighbors. Upon inspection, they discovered a pressure cooker wrapped in heavy-duty adhesive tape inside the bag. Recognizing the potential danger, the shopkeeper contacted the Ashulia police, who cordoned off the scene immediately. Preliminary assessments confirmed that the device contained explosive materials, prompting a request for specialized support.
A bomb disposal unit from the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrived on the scene and, by 6:30 a.m. on Friday, successfully moved the device to a nearby open field to conduct a controlled detonation.
Ashulia Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Tarikul Islam confirmed that a case has been filed under the Explosives Substances Act. Law enforcement officials are now reviewing the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the device and are actively working to identify and apprehend the individual responsible.
