Man shot on speedboat in Kushtia as authorities investigate suspicious river incident

A 38-year-old man was hospitalized with gunshot wounds early Friday following a mysterious nighttime incident on the Padma River in Kushtia’s Bheramara upazila. The victim, identified as Shariful Islam, a resident of Bahadurpur village, was reportedly acting as a bodyguard for Monirul Islam, the owner of a local recreational facility known as Moni Park.
According to details provided by local sources and police, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. when Monirul Islam took several associates out onto the river in a newly purchased speedboat. Approximately one kilometer away from the park area, shots were fired, leaving Shariful wounded. He was transported to Kushtia General Hospital, where medical staff recorded the injury as a gunshot wound in the emergency department register.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and the victim’s whereabouts became a point of concern after he was discovered missing from his hospital ward by midday. Dr. Iqbal Hasan, the Resident Medical Officer at Kushtia General Hospital, confirmed that while the patient was officially admitted, he was no longer present in the facility later that day.
Speaking via telephone on Friday evening, the victim’s wife, Boni, stated that she was in the process of transporting her husband to Dhaka for further treatment, citing his critical condition. She declined to comment on the nature of the event, stating that a full account would only be possible once his health improves.
Authorities investigating the scene found evidence suggesting a violent encounter inside the vessel. A senior district police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that the speedboat contained bloodstains and bullet holes, with initial forensic assessments suggesting the shot was fired at close range. Investigators also recovered several live rounds from the boat, and are currently working to determine their origin and ownership.
Attempts to reach Monirul Islam for comment were unsuccessful as his mobile phone remained powered off throughout the day. Bheramara Police Station officer-in-charge, Muhammad Jahedur Rahman, confirmed that law enforcement is actively investigating the incident and scrutinizing the accounts provided by those associated with the park. The late-hour river excursion, coupled with the unexplained disappearance of the victim from the hospital, has fueled significant public speculation in the local community.
