CID arrests three government employees for recruitment exam fraud via proxy candidates

Bangladesh’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested three government employees accused of orchestrating a large-scale examination fraud scheme involving the use of proxy candidates for state recruitment exams. The arrests, carried out by the CID’s Noakhali unit, bring the total number of individuals detained in the ongoing investigation to six.
Among those apprehended is Zulfikar Ali, an employee at the Matarbari coal-fired power project in Cox’s Bazar, who had recently been recommended for a cooperative cadre position following the 45th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examinations. Also taken into custody were Nuru Nabi and Md. Sohel, both office assistants at the tax commissioner’s office in Agrabad, Chittagong.
The investigation into the recruitment syndicate began after irregularities surfaced during the hiring process for the Noakhali Tax Zone under the Finance Ministry’s Internal Resources Division. Following a written examination held on June 5, 112 candidates were initially selected for various positions. However, during the final document verification process on June 21, authorities noticed significant discrepancies in the handwriting of two candidates, Md. Kamal Uddin and Md. Nasfurullah. When both men were asked to provide writing samples, they admitted to using proxy test-takers to secure their high scores.
A similar pattern of deception was uncovered the following day when officials identified handwriting irregularities with another candidate, Md. Sujan. While Sujan confessed to the fraud, his associate, a candidate named Rashed Uddin, managed to evade capture during the verification session.
According to the CID, the suspects had been running a sophisticated operation that provided proxy candidates in exchange for payments to manipulate government recruitment outcomes. Following the filing of a formal case at Sudharam Police Station, the CID assumed control of the investigation. Authorities apprehended Zulfikar Ali while he was attempting to flee from Matarbari to Dhaka, while Nabi and Sohel were arrested at their workplace in Chittagong. Officials stated that operations to identify and capture the remaining members of the syndicate are currently underway.
