There is no water in Rajapur health complex for five days, patients are suffering
Patients and their relatives have suffered greatly as water supply has been stopped for five consecutive days in Rajapur Upazila Health Complex of Jhalkathi. The water supply was cut off due to a fault in the underground transmission pipe of the deep tubewell. Hospital toilets have become unusable due to water shortage. Concerns are increasing among patients as odors and unsanitary environments pose health risks.
According to the hospital authorities, the pump was installed in the deep tubewell installed in the hospital about 55 years ago. From there water is supplied to the patients. But five days ago, the water supply was stopped due to fault in the iron pipes and housings of the deep tube well, 1,000 feet deep.
On Friday morning, it was seen that 88 patients including measles patients are admitted in the 50-bed hospital. As there is no water in the toilet, we have to bring water from the canal far away from the hospital and use it in the toilet. Apart from this, 9 families including doctors-nurses living in the hospital quarter are facing severe water crisis.
Many complain that it is not possible to shower, use the toilet and maintain the necessary cleanliness for four days. This increased the suffering of the patients. Nasreen Akter of Kanudaskathi village of Rajapur Upazila admitted Shafiullah, a one and a half year old child suffering from diarrhea, to the hospital last Wednesday. As there is no water in the hospital, she wants to go home without finishing her child’s treatment.
Farida Begum of Galua village of the upazila said, “She is under treatment in the hospital for five days. I can’t take a bath because there is no water. We have to fetch water from the canal and go to the toilet.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Abul Khair Mahmud said, there was a problem with deep tube wells for a long time. Installing a new water pump did not solve the problem. Instead, two pumps were burnt. Pipe cleaning is currently underway. If this is not resolved, temporary water supply from the pond will be arranged as an alternative. It may take at least 10 to 15 days to install new deep tube wells and start water supply. It also involves the issue of financial approval and allocation.
Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Rifat Ara Mauri said that the local parliament member Rafiqul Islam informed the Ministry of Health. The Civil Surgeon contacted the Chief Engineer of the Directorate of Health Engineering. An initiative has been taken to supply water to the hospital through the fire service as an emergency measure.
