Police investigate suspected rape and murder after woman’s body found in Mymensingh jute field

Police in Mymensingh recovered the decomposed body of an unidentified woman from a jute field on Friday, following reports of a foul odor emanating from the area. Authorities believe the victim, estimated to be around 32 years old, was sexually assaulted before being murdered.
The discovery was made after local farmers working in an adjacent field traced a strong smell to the jute plantation. Responding to an emergency call placed to the 999 service at approximately 9:30 a.m., officers from the Kotwali Model Police Station arrived at the scene. By 11:00 a.m., police secured the area and subsequently retrieved the remains by mid-afternoon.
The victim was discovered wearing a black burqa and matching clothing. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, including significant tissue damage to the face and chest, initial visual identification was impossible. Officials from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) have since collected fingerprints from the deceased in an effort to determine her identity.
The body has been transferred to the morgue at Mymensingh Medical College for a post-mortem examination. Mohammad Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge of the Kotwali Model Police Station, stated that law enforcement is currently prioritizing the identification of the victim and the apprehension of those responsible for the crime.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Md. Ashraful Karim noted that while preliminary evidence suggests a motive of sexual assault followed by homicide, investigators are waiting for the autopsy report to confirm the exact cause and circumstances of death. Police investigations remain ongoing.
