We will fly from Thakurgaon to Dhaka in the next two years: Mirza Fakhrul

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that, following assurances from the Prime Minister and other ministers, the Thakurgaon airport will be brought into operation, expressing optimism that within the next two years residents of the district may be able to travel directly from Thakurgaon to Dhaka by air. He made the remarks during a reception event held after an on-site visit by officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, including ministers, state ministers and senior bureaucrats, to assess the potential steps required to operationalize Thakurgaon Airport.

He added that people should remain patient as the project moves forward, noting that the government’s commitment has been reiterated at multiple levels. At the same time, he highlighted ongoing development initiatives in the region, including progress on a proposed public university and the establishment of a medical college. He also mentioned administrative restructuring efforts, including the gazette notification to divide Thakurgaon Sadar upazila into Bhulli and Ruhia upazilas, saying development work in the area is continuing.

Addressing local business leaders and entrepreneurs, he urged investment in industries and factories in Thakurgaon, arguing that such initiatives would increase local income and employment, and assured government cooperation for potential investors.

He also commented on political issues, accusing some groups of spreading misinformation to mislead the public. Referring to ongoing political discourse around reforms, he said certain narratives were being distorted for political purposes.

In a separate remark, he strongly criticized Jamaat-e-Islami, stating that the party would never be brought to power by the people of Bangladesh due to its historical role in the 1971 Liberation War, including opposition to independence and alleged involvement in atrocities.

Earlier at the same event, Afroza Khanom Rita said a full technical team had visited the airport site and inspected the runway and surrounding infrastructure. She stated that since the reopening of the airport was a commitment from the Prime Minister, efforts would be made to begin operations as soon as possible, with initial preparatory work expected to start within the next month.
