Intern Doctors Launch Indefinite Strike After Clashes at Sylhet Medical College Hospital

A violent confrontation between intern doctors, medical students, and patients’ relatives at Sylhet’s M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital has paralyzed medical services, triggering an indefinite work stoppage by junior physicians and an academic shutdown by students. The clash, which broke out late Tuesday night in the hospital’s emergency department, left at least six people injured and sparked widespread chaos within the facility.
The unrest began around 12:30 a.m. following a heated verbal altercation between a patient’s relative and an on-duty intern doctor regarding the treatment of a child. According to witnesses, the situation escalated rapidly when the patient’s party allegedly summoned outsiders to the hospital, leading to a physical assault on the medical staff. As other interns and students gathered in response, the confrontation intensified into a series of brawls, drawing police intervention to restore order.
Among those injured were intern doctors Taspianul Haque and Reza Niloy, as well as three individuals accompanying the patient and a fourth-year medical student. Hospital officials confirmed that one of the interns sustained serious injuries and remains under medical care, while others are being kept under observation. During the peak of the tension, local police encountered groups of students armed with sticks and metal pipes patrolling the hospital grounds.
By early Wednesday morning, the Intern Doctors Forum and the general student body issued separate statements condemning the violence. The groups described the attack as a direct threat to the integrity of the healthcare system and an indictment of the hospital’s security infrastructure. They have demanded the immediate identification and prosecution of the attackers, alongside a formal guarantee of safety for medical personnel.
The Intern Doctors Forum stated that the work strike will continue until authorities provide concrete assurances of a secure working environment and take exemplary legal action against those responsible for the assault. Simultaneously, the general students have declared an indefinite academic shutdown, vowing to boycott classes and campus activities until their security demands are addressed. Police and hospital administration officials remained on-site throughout the night to monitor the situation and initiate an investigation.
