RAB arrests six members of notorious Dhaka criminal gang following assault on police officers

RAB-2 has arrested six individuals, including a high-ranking lieutenant, following a violent assault on police officers in the capital’s Adabor area on Tuesday. Among those in custody is Abu Sayed, identified as the second-in-command of a notorious local criminal syndicate known as the “Kobji-Kata Anwar Group.”
The confrontation occurred after police launched an operation to apprehend suspects behind the robbery of a mobile banking agent in the Shekhertek neighborhood. During the pursuit, officers were ambushed by the suspects wielding sharp weapons. The attackers injured Adabor Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Zahidul Islam, and Sub-Inspector Tarun. Police personnel fired in self-defense, wounding two of the assailants. Four individuals were apprehended at the scene, and further intelligence led to the subsequent arrests, including that of Sayed. Authorities have confirmed that the injured officers are out of danger after receiving medical treatment.

The criminal collective, founded by Anwar Hossain, has long been a source of terror in the Mohammadpur and Adabor regions. The group earned its moniker—translated as “Wrist-Chopper”—due to the gang’s practice of severing the wrists of rivals and circulating videos of the violence on social media to exert influence. Although Hossain was incarcerated in February 2025, investigators report that the syndicate has splintered into various factions that continue to engage in mugging, extortion, drug trafficking, and organized crime. Police suspect that the network is currently operating under the control of a figure identified as “Axel Babu.”
According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the Mohammadpur and Adabor areas remain among the capital’s most volatile zones. Security officials estimate that over 50 criminal gangs are active in these neighborhoods, with at least 17 major syndicates engaged in systematic racketeering, illegal land grabbing, and narcotics distribution. Each group typically maintains a roster of 15 to 20 members, relying on criminal proceeds to sustain their operations. Other prominent groups currently under police scrutiny include the Patali, Level High, Dilla, Alex, Gangchil, Leo Thela, Farhad, Army Alamgir, Nabi, and Akbar gangs.

In response to the recent surge in violence and the attack on law enforcement, authorities have intensified special operations across the region. Officials from RAB-2 stated that further details regarding the investigation will be provided during a press briefing at their Karwan Bazar media center. Efforts to identify and capture remaining members of the criminal factions are ongoing.
